Come 2020, the era of 5G smartphone is set to arrive. Having already made some ripples in the mobile market this year, the 5G technology is expected to boom and grow in the coming year. The market which has so far been dominated only by the high-value devices is now evolving and the mid-range players are also gearing up.
Consequently, at the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, China, the Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun revealed Xiaomi’s big plans to launch 5G smartphones in 2020 after a successful launch of 2 5G enabled phones – Mi Mix 3 and Mi 9 Pro this year. Fearing extinction of 4G technology and getting motivated by the fantastic response from the launch of these two 5G smartphones, Xiaomi is all ready to grab the opportunity by spoiling the audience for choice with more than a dozen 5G phones next year in all the price tiers – high, middle and low-end. The latest research also indicates the growing numbers as the number of 5G connections worldwide is expected to reach 1.4 billion by 2025 with China taking the biggest share at 9 million 5G subscribers.
The step is considered to be in the right direction as the company had started losing the market share to its biggest competitor Huawei and the share went down from 13.9% last year to 11.8% this year in the second quarter. On the contrary, it is growing well in the recently entered European market and even the Indian market.
With two aggressive players in Xiaomi and Huawei, the competition is only going to get tough but how will this affect the Indian market and by when would the Indian market be ready for the 5G technology is yet to be seen.
